Mariners a Contender?

Growing up in Alaska it was hard not to like the Mariners. Their games where on TV and on the radio. And Dave Niehaus’s screams blasting through the radio "And it’s a Grandsalomi!" on the way home from church in Anchorage, forever indented in my brain a love for both baseball, and the Mariners. Then when I got a little bit older I started to appreciate the prestige that the mariner organization was building, with the exception of the occasional Lou Pinela rant. What with guys like Jay Buhner, Tino, Edgar, and of course Griffey…. I mean I could list dozens more but that’s a separate post in itself. They haven’t been to the playoffs since 2001. So it is very easy for me to get excited when they are only 1.5 games back. Granted they are in an inferior division as compared to the AL East. But it seems to me that all the right pieces are coming together for a championship contending team. Maybe not this year, but hopefully by next year they will be considered a serious contender. And no, their pitching staff does not solely revolve around King Felix. David Pauly who has been a dominant reliever hasn’t lost a game this year, and has a .96 ERA in 40 IP. And I’m sure everyone has heard of the hard throwing Pineda. And Jason Vargas is starting to pitch really well; he had 9 scoreless innings against Baltimore and got a no decision. So great, they have good pitching but no run support. Well first off Chone Figgins needs to be shot, batting .198. But there is hope. Obviously Ichiro. Although his average is considerably lower than normal .258, but it’s still early and come on, it’s Ichiro. Also hard hitting Justin Smoak is starting to pan out in a big way, and he’s a Switch hitter. And with Gutierez back we have some mediocre speed on the base paths and the best centerfielder in baseball. Their closer Brandon League is starting to be quite successful as well, 18-21 in save opportunities, tied for the best in the majors. All I am saying is that I want an Ichiro jersey for Christmas. Also we need to get Noah on here. Quit going to NPR and contribute! Last thing. Can we get a picture of Kevin Costner on the picture slide? If Kenny Powers gets to be on there so should KC.

  1. I too have many memories of listening to the Mariner games on the radio in AK. BTW, radio is the best way to enjoy baseball.

Niehaus was an amazing announcer. What he actually said when someone hit a grandslam was: "Break out the rye bread and mustard Grandma, this is a grandsalami!"

His voice was so exciting to listen to. May he rest in peace.

I fell in love with Edgar Martinez, their amazing DH.

I really am excited to hear that things are going better for the Mariners and hope that Ichiro can bounce back and get his tratitional 200+ hits this year and set a higher record for consecutive 200 hit seasons.

I will never forget Griffey on the bottom of the pile at home plate in '95 when the Mariners beat the Yankees in the playoffs.

I didn't even care that they beat the Yankees it was soooo cool.

    Go Mariners.

    Thanks Bobber.

  2. Great post Bobber! I totally remember listening to the Mariner games. It's just like my post about being a DBacks fan. It's almost impossible to live somewhere and not like the local teams. Unless I lived in Boston it would be easy to continue to hate the Red Sox.

One of my top 5 sports memories of all time is a no brainer. Edgar ripping a gapper in Left Center field and watching Griffey score from first to beat the Yanks. Even though the Yanks lost I was still happy.

The best part about watching the Mariners growing up was the best up the middle defense ever. A Rod and
Cora turning 2 and Griffey roaming CF. Unbelievable.

  3. Not to break up the nostalgia party but aside from their stellar pitching (if unproven pitching aside from Felix) they are not really poised for any kind of future.

Smoak is young and will be great. Ichirio has maybe another year or two left before he becomes officially mediocre.

They do have some studs in the minors that may play this year or next but who else is there? They do have great defense but Guterriz cannot hit a baseball. Olivo is tearing it up but at 32 and a catcher is he really the long term guy and can he even do this for a full season?

Love the '95 team. Agree with all comments regarding that era. Love them and love some of the guys currently playing but I don't see where the offense is really set to turn it up enough next season or beyond to push for being a real contender. I hope so, but not sure at this point.

P.S. - Journeyman Adam Kennedy is leading the team in hitting. .282.

  4. OK, that was fun,nostalgia.

No the Mariners aren't a contender yet.

They don't have a lot of top prospects.

They do have to hope that Bedard might someday be a pitcher again after they paid, 20, 30, 50 Billion dollars.!

They currently have the following MLB ranks:
    Runs 27th
    BA 30th
    OB% 30th
    Slugging % 30th

But, they are in a four team division, are somehow playing .500 ball.

    In pitching MLB ranks:
    ERA 6th
    quality starts 5th
    WHIP 3rd
    Bating avg. against 4th.

with a little luck,no injuries they can reasonably expect to win most of the series with teams they play the rest of the year.

They already took 2 of 3 from Boston.

They have upcoming: 3 with NYY, Philly, Texas and Atlanta
4 with Tampa and Detroit that will be tough too. But they could win half of them.

    Should be interesting.

Last year the Giants won with mostly pitching, not to say that the Mariners have as good pitching as Giants.

I'll take pitching over hitting every time (except with steroids).

  5. oh, ESPN power rankings have the Mariners at number 14 right now.

    not bad.

    D-Backs 12

  6. We should do a post on ESPN Power Rankings sometime. I remember in the beginning of the season the Dbacks and Pirates were buried at the bottom while the 2-7 Red Sox were #7. Seriously???

Anyway, pitching can get them through, and I always root for the Pirates just because of the Altoona Curve...one day at a ballpark can change your whole life view. :)

  7. Amen.

So he is a quizical question:

    http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=CF&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=502100

Elvis Presley is at AAA and batting .336
    OPS is only .896

Why do they keep him at AAA?
