Jeter

How is it that the Yankee Empire has cranked out 39 Hall Of Fame players, several being in the top 5 of all time, and none of them got to 3000 hits? Amazing!

Jeter, who turned 37 yesterday and is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday, is sitting on a club-record 2,994 hits. He owns the club's all-time records for stolen bases (330), singles (2,219), at-bats (9,584) and plate appearances (10,841), and is second in doubles (477) and games played (2,357).

He's third in runs scored (1,724), fourth in total bases (4,303) and runs created (1,699), sixth in walks (971) and extra-base hits (775), and seventh in batting average (.312).

Jeter ranks eighth in RBIs (1,155) and 10th in home runs (236).

One can argue Jeter's club-record 241 double-play grounders should temper the praise. Ditto for the 1,603 strikeouts that rank second in team history -- an ugly number for a contact hitter.

But there are a LOT of "intangibles".

  2. What's your point though? We all know Jeter is amazing and that the #2 will be retired and he is the greatest SS in Yankees history, what's your point?

  3. Interesting stats. Love it. Thanks for posting. There doesn't really need to be a "point." General reminders of how great a player is/was is always interesting. We should assign each of the contributers one decade each and each week you have to post interesting stats and stories about that player. Like if Father Stephen had the '70's he would do a thing on Reggie Jackson or some stud that gets lost in history. There are so many ballplayers out there that dominated for a short stretch of time but nonetheless dominated. Like, Cecil Fielder hit 50 homeruns. "The Bird" Fidrych. Andre Dawson in the '80's, Jim Rice. Who good was Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver, and have you seen Nolan Ryans single season numbers??? Love that kind of stuff. You forget how amazing players were just as it's easy to get lost in the media around Jeter and lose sight of how incredible he really has been for so many years.

  4. I agree with you that we should do the decade facts assignment. I also love random facts. My point was that why Jeter? We all know he's awesome, we grew up with him. Let's do some posts on random guys like Bob Gibson and try and raise awareness of dominance in an era that we didn't all witness.
