Can the Yankees compete with the Phillies or Red Sox Rotation?

CC
Hughes
Burnett
... Pettitte??
...Nova??

Versus:
Beckett
Lester
Dice K
Buchholz
Lackey

Or the Phillies new Rotation of:
Halladay
Lee
Oswalt
Hamels
Blanton/Kendrick

Of course the Maddux/Smoltz/Avery/Leibhardt didn't exactly cover the walls with Championships but Lee going to the Phillies and a healthy Red Sox rotation is pretty dangerous.  Red Sox are also close to signing Bobby Jenks as their new closer.  Does that mean Pap's is going elsewhere in a trade?  They still have Daniel Bard too...

Not saying the Yankees are lost without Lee but banking on Andy Pettitte to come back to MAYBE pitch 20 starts is not exactly matching the Phillies/Giants/Red Sox in pitching.  They do still have Rivera though.

Read a few things on Bleacher Report that the Yankees could possibly go after a David Price/Clay Kershaw type person in the league using Jesus Montero as trade chips.  That would be interesting...

Side Note:  Check out the career stats of the 2011 rotation for the Phillies.  I think people overlook how good they are after Halladay and Lee, the "Superstars."  Oswalt is still wicked good and so is Hamels even if he had a so-so year in '09.

Halladay, Lee, Oswalt and Hamels are ALL 200 IP, 200K guys that could easily win 20 games each if they stay healthy.  Ridiculous.  Amazing what a switch to a good offense will do for a pitchers stats and "W" colomn...

  1. Against the Red Sox, maybe, but definitely not the Phillies. But they shouldn't care since they are not in the American league. National league in my opinion is still where the best pitchers are, and American league has the best hitters.

Yankee hitting and general hate for boston will carry them. Shouldn't even worry about Philly unless you meet them in a WC. And if the Yankees make it there, then their pitching is obviously good enough to compete.

  2. I think if the season started today that the Phillies are the favorite. They were top 3 before Lee seeing that they won 97 games (more than anyone else) while having a lot of injuries. Lee makes them a potential 112 win team and their lineup is better than any team in baseball. If Halladay, Lee, and Oswalt can win 20 games then I don't see anyone beating them. They only have to make it to the playoffs and then do the 3 man rotation like the Yanks did in 09 and it's over with.

The Yanks need pitching bad but I don't think its starting. We made it to the playoffs with what we still have plus a horrible AJ, so if AJ plays somewhere in between his actual potential and last year then he's a solid 3 or 4. Plus Hughes is ready to burst out as Cy Young candidate. The problem is our middle relief. Pettite will be back although it might not be till June. If he retires he'll miss it after a couple of months and come back rested. We'll bring up some talent and make a trade for a stud at the All-Star break but what we need is relief.

Last playoffs our starters were pretty good but bringing in Mitre, Robertson and Logan is disguisting. Here is their IP's and ERA's for the ALCS vs Texas...

    Robertson- 2,2 IP (20.25 ERA)
    Mitre- 2.2 IP (10.12 ERA)
    Logan- .2 IP (27.00 ERA)

WE NEED MIDDLE RELIEFE, FORGET CLIFF LEE!!!
