Spring Training
Is it too early to talk about Spring Training? I don't think so. The winter meetings are over, and everyone has made the moves they wanted. What's left, salary arbitration meetings? Check the link for the 2011 Schedule.
I'm excited for this spring training season. The cactus league has a new team, The Reds, and the Diamondbacks and Rockies have a new home in the Valley of the Sun. Opening Day for this stadium is Feb 26 with a match up between the two teams. Should be lots of fun and you know I will be there. After a miserable season for D-Backs, well there's only room for improvement. Rumor has it Xavier Nady and Henry Blanco are on the way here.
Lets see, Blanco: .215 Avg, 8 RBI, 2 HR last year. (he'll fit in nicely)
Nady: .256 avg, 33 RBI, 6 HR
Can anyone else smell the championship??????

Hold on there Chucky, anytime after the last game of the World Series is the time for talk of Spring Training.
ReplyDeleteBut the Yankees have yet to complete their moves, I hope.
I watched The X-man (Nady)play here in Pittsburgh and he ain't bad. Why did he have such a bad year? Was he still coming off the injury that sent him from Pittsburgh?
2008-Pitts 89 games 327 ab 50 runs 13 hr 57 rbi .330 avg. 383 obg .535 slg .918 ops
not bad!
He was fairly good with Yanks too.
Those numbers will go up.
Love to root for the D-Backs, they do a lot for our troops.
As for the Yanks, can you say old?
Starting Five is scary after CC and Phil, though I like Nova.
Keep it real, Cesar, you da man.
Blanco is a 39 year old "catcher" as in the Old School catcher that can't hit a lick, doesn't take crap from people and makes the guy on the mound a better pitcher by his play calling. Agree, can't hit a lick but neither could Girardi and he was a great catcher on championship teams. They said in one article he was a pickup as much for his "influence on the young latino players" as his actual ability. Dbacks need those 35+ year old players to balance out the 22 year olds like the Yankees always used to have with the 37 year old Paul O'Neils/Scott Brosius and 23 year old Derek Jeter/Jorge Posada/Mariano Riveras.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Father Stephen. Nady was coming off Tommy John after that 26HR year with Pittsburg/Yanks and he never really got full time playing status this year to get into a groove. Wishful thinking maybe but way better than 2010 Parra out there in LF.
Winter Meetings commence for the final meeting actally in a couple weeks at the Sanctuary Resort the 3rd week of January. There will be trades, signings and more movement by then and during that week. After that there are the arbitration hearings in early february and the few smatterings of signings from who is left over by Spring Training. Yankees are not done at all. $100 bucks says they go after and get someone significant like a Gavin Floyd, David Price or Bumgardner to fill a gap with not getting Cliff Lee. Dbacks are done though. Still lots of great ball players unsigned. Brandon Webb has three teams looking at him...minor league contract maybe but still some interest. Good post Cesar!
Easy on the Blanco confidence, he's not gonna solve the DBacks pitching situation.
ReplyDeleteCesar, it's never too early to start baseball talks. I consider the whole year the "baseball season", the other sports are simply a distraction for us when the GM's go play gold instead of improving their teams.
I really do love the d-Backs, it's hard not to when you live in AZ but it's so disheartening seeing the unappreciative fans. I mean the Dbacks were in the playoffs like 3 years ago? The fans still suck but I think AZ fans in all sports will get better over the next 50 years as people like Jeremy and Noah stay here and raise their kids as AZ fans.
With spring training in AZ's backyard baseball will always be a big deal and I love it. What I would like to see is an opening day sold out. Not likely but I'll be there.
