Franchise Player

It's 2011 and MLB has decided to put all of the players into a pool and have a franchise draft. You are the GM of the Yankees and you have first pick. Which player would you choose right now in MLB that you would want to build a franchise around. Choose one pitcher and one batter:

Pitcher: Joe Johnson (Marlins)
Batter: Robinson Cano (Yankees)

  3. Didn't go with Pujols, perhaps the best player ever, cause we are starting a franchise and Pujols is already peaking.
    Crazy?

  4. Mike Stanton could just flop tomorrow though too. You can start a Franchise with a guy that is just turning 30 (Jan 1980 bday). He's easily got another 5-6 solid/stellar years in him. I think starting a franchise with someone admittedy "peaking" at least starts you off with a guy that is pretty much a sure thing .330/30+/115+ with Gold Glove Defense and no scandels. Stanton is just one of many potential superstars that COULD be great. I'm always hesitant to jump on a bandwagon until the guy has played a full season. Strasburg for instance could blow his arm out next start. So going with him over T.C. who is only 3 years older but already has two cy young awards is my reasoning to take him over SS. Given that Stanton and Strasburg could be the next Griffey/Clemens so they are not bad picks, just not as safe as a Pujols/Lincecum. But that's why we have this blog.

  5. Pitcher: Lincecum
    Batter: Pujols.

Yes he might be peaking, but lets be honest, I'm running a business here. And I need butts in the seats to make money. Who better to do that than the best hitter in the league? Besides, you need a good vet in the locker room. Now that is a good investment to start a franchise.

  6. I agree with Cesar. If you want seats to be filled, go with talent who is talented now, not down the road. Perhaps Roy Holladay and Pujols are better choices than two players who are young and will be All-stars for 10 years because youth doesn't necessarily attract fans...or could you get both with a guy like Strasburg who is 21 and sells out all the seats?
