There is a lot of talk currently on whether or not Jeff Bagwell was on steroids during his career and another wave of voters that want to all out boycott anybody that played the last 25 years from futher entry into the Hall of Fame. Obviously that would be a travesty in the highest degree, along the lines of the one Tucson, AZ HOF writer that would not vote for Rickey Henderson (which kept him from a unanimous vote) because, "I never liked the guy."
So take a minute to read this article. http://itsaboutthemoney.net/archives/2010/12/31/the-problem-with-believing-everything-our-eyes-see/
And then this one. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/12/30/how-about-this-no-one-from-the-past-25-years-makes-the-hall-of-fame/
This is going to be quite the topic for the next few years as one player after another becomes eligible for the HOF voting. Griffey, Thomas, Gwynn, Jeter, Arod, and all the "Greats" we've watched for the last twenty years. Proof or no proof the last 20 years has a dark cloud of disgust over it and even players that were honest all along are questioned.
So read these two very short articles and let me know what you think on the subject.

To expect players to speak out against ped's during the 90's is absurd.
ReplyDeleteEverybody loved what was happening and didn't care about how or why.
All who knew turned away.
We can't read back into the past the perspective of today.
Forget about ped's unless there is proof and just vote based upon the stats.
Forget about character or else kick some people out of the hall. (Ty Cobb for instance)
I was watching a Pete Rose game the other day where they were up I think, 18-6 in the 5th, and he tagged up from second on a fly ball to left center, dove head first into third, and then tagged up up on the next play sprinting home like he was the tying run in a world series game!
ReplyDeletePretty cool to see him playing that hard in a blowout game in May....btw, the Cubs came back to tie it at 20 in the 9th...no big deal.
That's exactly my point Noah. Pete had extra incentive to win and perform better. He's like a CEO that gets a $1 per year salary and earns his paycheck on the performance of his stock. (Steve Jobs). Nothing like money to motivate someone. What's A-Rod's motivation to perform better when he's already under contract for a boatload of money?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Cesar but the concept behind steroids I think was more that they did these steroids to GET the contract. I think Arod was on steroids way before he admitted to doing them. He was busting out those massive years in advance on steroids so he was doing roids to destroy the baseball to GET that massive deal. I think that is why everyone did it, to hit more HR's which translates into more $$. Then once they were on steroids and got the contract they just needed to maintain so they don't disappoint. It's a lose-lose.
ReplyDeletePete Rose should 100% be in the Hall of Fame. It will happen and I completely agree, at this point him betting on his team to WIN while he was a MANAGER is not a big deal when you consider hundreds of ballplayers were cheating. If Rose was betting against his team, I'd say hang him in the Town Square.
Whatever, I'm so sick of steroids already. Ted Williams would have used too and definitely Ruth would have used. Call me ignorant, but I'm ready to ignore it. This argument keeps going round and round and now were deciding who should be allowed in the Hall? The Hall is a joke anyway, fans should vote. 1998 was the best year of my life, who cares if they were juiced. Lets forget about, the league has made honorable punishments and tests to catch guys now. ITS OVER! Pujols is the greatest hitter of our generation an isn't juiced. Griffey and Jeter never used.
