WAR
Wins over replacement.
Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an attempt by the sabermetric community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic. You should always use more than one metric at a time when evaluating players, but WAR is pretty darn all-inclusive and provides a handy reference point. WAR basically looks at a player and asks the question, “If this player got injured and their team had to replace them with a minor leaguer or someone from their bench, how much value would the team be losing?” This value is expressed in a wins format, so we could say that Player X is worth 6.3 wins to their team while Player Y is only worth 3.5 wins.
From 2001-2010 Albert leads MLB with a 80.6
But, 30 million a year?
Did you know? With 400 at bats, the difference between hitting .287 and .302 is 10 hits.
Do you know how Pujols has done in the post-season? With Pujols last year they stunk. In two World Series (2004 + 2006) Albert has a .267 avg. 1 HR, 2 RBI
He is 31, he is already SLOWLY declining, avg has dropped the last three years. Bat speed.
He still is amazing, but 30 million?
What wins Championships? Pitching, defense and speed.
If they weren't paying big Al 30 mil, they could get more pitching, speed.

I agree. Mortgaging your entire future ('01 Dbacks for instance...) RUINS the next 5-10 years. The NFL is a great example of a sport where superstars are replaced everyday and nobody is a sacred cow. Does that play the same as a hitter in baseball?? Not really. But I like the mentality that a stud WR/RB will get cut for holding out and outright replaced and the next guy comes in and is just as good. See Denver Broncos RB or ANY Patriot the last 20 years.
ReplyDeletePujols is hands down the best player of our generation. The greatest player of our generation not on steriods is Ken Griffey Jr. But until Pujols gets caught and we find out he's really 34 not 31 we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Does being the best mean 27.5 million a year? If you are a greedy bastard it does. I've read the argument that they just want to be compensated fairly. I get it. Arod got 10 for 275. I get it. Well I do the same job as two dozen other directors in the Valley and I know I don't make the same money they do. Holdouts and threats don't work in the real world to get more money so why is it ok for athletes to get it. $50,000 to $100,000 a year is a big deal. But is it really a big deal if you got paid say $20 million a year instead of $27.5 if it was for 10 years? Why do you really have to have the same contract?? Greed.
Let him go. You still have Matt and other studs on the team in a weak division and you have Carpenter and Wainwright.
I agree.
Can't agree more. I was a big Pujols supporter before this because of an article I read about him building churches all over St. Louis and the Dominican. I still have something in my heart that the union has him by the balls and won't let him low ball himself. Think about if Pujols took a 10 yr/200 million contract. Since he's the best player in baseball than every free agent from now on could no way possibly make more than Big Al. Let's say Evan Longoria has a huge year and wants a big contract. Well no one would give him more than 20 mill cause that's what the best player in baseball makes. It almost sets an invisible salary cap. Pujols has to make more than Arod in the players eyes other wise there all screwed. It's really messed up. I think baseball needs to change something about these salaries. It's getting embarrassing. Why do baseball players make so much?
ReplyDeleteSidney Crosby, by far the best hockey player in the league at 24 years old just signed a huge contract last summer. Guess how much a year he makes? I guarantee you can't guess the right number...take a guess...ya your wrong. He makes $8.7 million a year. Hockey has team caps at 57 million and a player can max out at 20% of the teams salary so Crosby's max salary would be 11.4 million which he declined so his team could get some good free agents. His team, the Penguins, won the Cup last year and went 7 games in every playoff series. In the end Crosby played all 82 regular season games and an additional 28 playoff games putting him at 110. Pujols played 159 and wants 4 times the amount. Oh and Sid the Kid gets slammed around the ice all night and skates his ass off. I'm not arguing Hockey is better by any means I'm just comparing professional athletes and the revenue. Hockey games are expensive and the Pens sell out every game so what's the difference?
Something needs to change. Can the fans form a union? Why not? If all baseball fans went on strike and decided to not go to a single game until ticket prices dropped and players stopped being greedy. Do you think it would work?
